SUMMARY:How Small Mammal Personalities May Shape Forests Under Changing Cli
 mates
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nPlant species are expected to respond to warming temper
atures and changes in precipitation in the face of climate change by shift
ing ranges to higher latitudes and elevations. Oaks are one such species\,
but unlike wind-dispersed species\, will depend upon animals (such as squ
irrels\, mice\, and voles) to disperse their large seeds into their new ha
bitable range. Many factors can influence this plant-animal relationship\,
including individual behavior. Ivy Yen will share her research\, which in
vestigates how the small mammal personalities (whether they are shy or bol
 d) differentially select and cache seeds to influence future forest regene
ration. She will explain that it takes a range of personalities to maintai
n forests.\n\nIvyYen is a doctoral student in the Department ofWildlife\,F
isheries\,and Conservation Biology at the University of Maine in the lab o
f wildlife ecologist Alessio Mortelliti\, who is based at the University o
f Trieste. Her research focuses on the consequences of individual behavior
al variation while using small mammals as a model system.\n\nSign up: http
