PRESENTATION
Seeds of Change: Promoting Plant Biodiversity in Our Community
Michael Piantedosi, Director of Conservation, Native Plant Trust
At a time of great change globally, local conservation lands and public green spaces are more important places to invest time and effort than ever. The common driver of many efforts to retain plant biodiversity – from large tracts of wilderness area to pollinator gardens in cities and suburbs – is seeds. Michael will discuss the use of native seeds and the role native plants play in maintaining overall biodiversity on our landscapes, from the hyperlocal to the international. Michael will highlight work Native Plant Trust and collaborators have done to build a supply of locally-adapted, native species seed in the northeast US. Gardeners and conservation land managers can help to sustain and protect native plant populations by using these carefully documented, wild-sourced seeds on both public and private sites of almost any size. We may not know what the future holds, but what is certain is that we will need multi-layered, science-based approaches to saving plant diversity and the life it sustains, and that all begins with a seed.
