When

Thursday, 10/01/2026 - 10/31/2026
9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Event Type

The Newton Conservators Invasives Team tackles garlic mustard, buckthorn, black swallow-wort, bittersweet, japanese knotweed, and other problems in many of Newton’s open spaces.  Come join us!  The schedule for this month is listed below (dates are listed by month in separate “events”).  Help keep these invaders out! Wear long pants tucked into socks, closed shoes, and garden gloves. Trash bags will be provided; the City will dispose properly as trash, not as yard waste.   New to our invasives sessions? See our FAQs and complete Volunteer Release form. Rain will cancel the session.  If in doubt, contact Katherine Howard at 617 721 2571.

For October, 9:30am-12 noon on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday is still the goal but due to weekend community events, it’s mostly Thursdays, with one Saturday and one Sunday (starting in November more weekends will be available).   We’ll focus on knotweed, porcelainberry, bittersweet, and shrubs.

Oct 8 Thursday 9:30am-12 noon.  NEW location!  Hemlock Gorge Reservation at Cook’s Bridge.  Park at the Mills Falls lot next to Cook’s Bridge off Eliot St in Upper Falls.

Oct 15 Thursday   9:30am-12 noon. Cold Spring Park, knotweed along the ridge trail near the small meadow.  Meet at the small meadow after parking at Duncklee or Plymouth (due to the city closure of Beacon St for road work).

Oct 22 Thursday   9:30am-12 noon. Heartbreak Hill Park. Meet at the top of the park at corner Manet Rd and Reservoir Drive in Chestnut Hill.

Oct 25 Sunday 9:30am-12 noon.  City Hall ponds – porcelain berry and shrubs.  Meet at the circle in front of City Hall.

Rain will cancel the session.  If in doubt, contact Katherine Howard at 617 721 2571.  New to our invasives sessions? See our FAQs and complete Volunteer Release form.
