If the Mass Ready Act becomes law, the cities and towns who have a pending home rule petition at the time of final passage will be considered to have “opted in”. This means that the communities who have petitioned the Legislature for the authority to regulate rodenticides will be able to act as soon as the Governor signs this bill into law.
Newton is one of the communities that has a pending home rule petition, which sought state authorization to prohibit the use of Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs) on both public and private property within city limits to protect wildlife, pets, and children.
However, the Massachusetts House of Representatives also must pass this legislation before it becomes law and SGARs are banned in Newton. They will take up the bill by the end of July.
