The Eastern Screech Owl is a year-round inhabitant of Newton. It comes in two colors, red or gray. You’ll rarely see it during daylight hours unless you’re lucky enough to spot one dozing at the entrance of its tree-hole. During almost any month of the year, it may be heard calling at night. Its tremulous whinny is a sound you’d scarcely call a “hoot.” It may be mobbed and scolded by chickadees and other birds if they find it outside its nest hole in daylight hours. A noisy, agitated flock of small birds should tip you off to the possibility of seeing one.
