Come explore the pollinators of late summer and fall at Hammond Woods, Newton’s largest conservation area and improve your insect and plant identification skills. Under the leadership of Jonathan Regosin, a director at Newton Conservators and Consulting Biologist for the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife, participants will learn how to use the iNaturalist app to document and identify species. Hammond Woods’s habitats include noted rock outcroppings of Roxbury Puddingstone, brooks, ponds, wetlands, fields, and a historic woodland garden.
These BioBlitz events are part of a larger effort by Newton Conservators to document and raise awareness about the great diversity of plants and animals in Newton’s open spaces. Previous iNaturalist observations for Hammond/Webster Woods are available here. Participants may go off-trail to identify flora and fauna and should dress appropriately. Meet at Hammond Pond trailhead.
Registration: Limited to 30 people. Registration is optional but recommended, so we can send you scheduling changes, directions or advice (such as about trail hazards) before the event and educational resources after it.
